—Valkyrie Yuna, Chapter 47 |
Valkyrie Yuna (ヴァルキリー・ユナ Varukirī Yuna?) is a machine and one of the Four Shining Stars.[1] As the Sword of Edens, she is responsible for maintaining Edens Zero's armaments.[2] She was also the teacher of Homura Kōgetsu, a member of the Crew of Edens, and Paul.[3][4] In Universe 0, she is alive and has joined the crew.
Appearance[]
In Valkyrie's deleted memories, she lacked a ponytail leaving her hair down and had a black leather jacket. [5]
Valkyrie is a machine with the figure of a tall yet slim, woman with a dark skin tone, salmon pink eyes, and matching long hair tied in a ponytail with a lock of hair that hangs over the left side of her face. She wears a white armored battle suit that is form-fitting with green gauntlets, pauldrons, and a pair of winged boots with the emblem "E1" on her chest.[6] She has a seam line on her face that goes through her right eye.[7]
Personality[]
According to Homura, Valkyrie is an awe-inspiring individual who had a mischievous side to her.[8] She also has an air of intensity,[9] and is very encouraging and caring towards her pupil.[10] She believes in the invigorating power of one's own words, as demonstrated when she first encouraged Homura to speak her mind.[11] According to Sister Ivry, she liked to look at the stars.[12] Homura's habit to challenge others while in the bath also comes from Valkyrie.
Synopsis[]
History[]
Valkyrie was created by the former Demon King, Ziggy, on Planet Granbell as a member of the Demon King's Four Shining Stars.[13][14] At some point on Oedo, she saved a very young Homura Kōgetsu from three thugs who wanted to sell her on Guilst,[15] and took her on as a disciple,[16] training her until her sudden disappearance around X487.[17] It is later revealed that Valkyrie disappeared in order to find Homura's biological mother after suffering discrimination by the citizens of Oedo for not being an actual blood relative of Homura which affected her young pupil. She traveled to Mildian to see Xiaomei to learn the location of Homura's real mother Kurenai Kōgetsu.[18] She traveled to Planet Sun Jewel, meets Paul who would become her disciple after being inspired by her, and finds Kurenai imprisoned within the Labor District.[19] After learning that Kurenai can't return because she accumulated a huge debt at the wealthy sector casinos, Valkyrie offers to pay off her debt in her place so that she can return to Homura, which she tearfully accepts.[20]

Valkyrie unleashing Odin Strike to protect the people of Labor District
Two years passed and Valkyrie found out from Paul that Kurenai never returned to Homura after being freed. Instead, she became the wife of the then ruler Baron Mordo, assassinated him, and seized his wealth and power for herself as the new ruler of the planet instead.[21] Moments later the Labor District was attacked by a huge swarm of Stones, provoked by Kurenai to force the laborers to mine more metals for her.[22] It was then, Valkyrie fought the swarm entirely on her own to protect the people of the Labor District. She ultimately defeated the swarm but had suffered critical damage during the fight. Thinking about Homura, she knelt down and lamented that she never told Homura that she indeed loved her before she finally succumbed to her wounds and died. Despite this, Valkyrie becomes a symbol of hope to the rebellion with Paul forming the Valkyrie's Army.[23]
Universe 0[]
After leaving the Edens Zero, Valkyrie went to Oedo where she fought in the war waged by Sun Jewel's private army. During this she met Homura, where she then took her on as a disciple and raised her.[24] Valkyrie had apparently died five years ago,[25] because she took her student's place to be beheaded as Homura had accidently injured Seiji's wrist in a match within the great shogun's presence. She told Homura to live strong before her head was sliced off in front of her student.[26]
A few weeks after this, she woke up in Seiji's second home, where the boy had repaired her. Unfortunately, Homura had already left the planet to find Kurenai. Valkyrie then traveled to Mildian, where Xiaomei instructed her to simply wait for Homura on Sun Jewel. There, she met Kurenai and told her of the situation, where they both agreed to wait for Homura together.[27] She wanted to save Kurenai, but could not do so while the man who forced Kurenai into a marriage still held the Satellite Blaze.[28]
Sun Jewel arc[]
While in the Labor District, Paul talks to Valkyrie's remains about the arrival of Homura, now a member of the Crew of Edens, asking what they should do about it.[4] Later after finding out the truth, Homura and the others find Valkyrie's smiling corpse, kneeling in the center of the mining area where she died heroically and Paul tells them how she died protecting the people.[29] Homura stays with Valkyrie's remains,[30] until she hears the sound of battle and tries to get up but is paralyzed. Garrot arrives and reveals the slow-acting drugs she got from his whip are starting to take effect. Garrot then goes to Valkyrie, saying that he has some respect for her, proceeding to lick her face and say that she was special. He hits Valkyrie's head with his whip, making her head fall off.[31] Homura then uses Odin Strike to knock Valkyrie's sword away into the air, making it pierce through Garrot. Her head is later placed back.[32]
After the short reunion between mother and daughter, Homura goes back to Valkyrie's remains and leaves her doll that she used to carry as a child. Stating that if it represents her bond with her mother, then she wants Valkyrie to have it. Homura thanks her for all she's done, calling her mother.[33] After the liberation of Sun Jewel, the Edens Zero crew decides to leave Valkyrie's corpse on Sun Jewel as a symbol of hope for the planet. The team returns to the Edens Zero, informing the remaining Shining Stars of Valkyrie's death. Sister refuses to accept Valkyrie's death and asks why they did not bring her body back. After explaining their reasons, Sister insists she could fix or rebuild her, only for Witch to tell her that it would not be the same. To honor Valkyrie's memory, Homura steps up to replace her teacher's position as "The Sword of Edens".[34] Afterward at the observatory, Sister and Witch followed and both Shining Stars mourned for their fallen friend in private.[35]
Edens Zero Reunion arc[]
Before Homura is swarmed by the Stones, Valkyrie comes to her rescue and slices a number of them. Seeing her student standing still, she asks what she is doing and reminds her that her mother Kurenai is in danger. She smiles after Homura slices the beast and saves her mother.[36]
